Carefully clean the used pistons from dirt and carbon. See that the piston`s annular grooves is clean. Use the special tool to clean the oil drain holes. By the carbon removing, do not damage the surface of the annular grooves` sides. Such damages to it by scratches can cause increased oil consumption or increased gas breakthrough during engine operation. You should use special piston ring pliers installation to avoid damage of them.
In no case don`t install the piston rings manually. This could lead to the injuries; also it can be a reason the piston rings deformation, damage or spraining. There are some types of piston ring mounting kit: mounting kit for piston rings for trucks or light vehicles.
Some mechanics can to do installation of the piston ring manually. But it often leads to damage to the ring by the installation.
Follow the right order installation of the piston rings:
- 1) install the oil scraper ring;
- 2) install the compression ring;
- 3) install the first compression ring.
Special marking shows like “Top” means that this side of the piston ring should be on top and facing the combustion chamber.
Check if the rings rotate freely in the ring grooves of the piston.
When mounting the oil piston rings, consisting of two parts, always observe the correct position of the spring expanders. The ends of the spring expander should always be located on the opposite side of the piston ring lock.
In case piston rings installation which consist of three parts the correct position of the spring expanders is the requirement that provides oil removal function.
All locks of such piston rings must be installed at an angle of 120 ° relative to each other.
