Ignition Distributor Construction

Ignition System Construction

The distributor’s main function is to route high voltage from the ignition coil to the spark plugs in the correct firing order by correct amount of time.

How ignition system works

Distributor and contact breaker unit consist of a voltage current breaker and high-voltage current distributor combined in one device.

Ignition Distributor Scheme: 1 – shaft; 2 – plate; 3 – movable disk; 4 – rotor with electrode (runner); 5 – cap; 6 – output of high voltage; 7 – spring; 8 – contact coal; 9 – cap latch; 10 – centrifugal governor; 11 – vacuum regulator; 12 – adjusting nuts of octane-corrector; 13, 14 – lower and upper plate of octane corrector; 15 – eccentric; 16 – lever; 17 – breaker fixing screw; 18 – movable contact; 19 – fixed contact; 20 – output of low voltage; 21 – ignition distributor  cam.

Ignition Distributor consists of housing, in which are installed centrifugal governor 10, contact breaker of low voltage and rotor 4 with electrode, and cap 5.  The vacuum regulator and plate octane corrector are attached to the distributor housing with nuts 12.  A fixed plate is also attached to the body, on which a movable disk is mounted on a ball bearing 3.

How an ignition distributor works

There is a plate on the disk, which has a stand with a fixed contact of the breaker 19. The movable contact 18 is on the same plate on the lever 16 isolated from the case and is always pressed against the fixed contact by means of a spring. The movable contact 18 is connected to the low-voltage output 20 insulated from the housing using a wire. The wire from the ignition coil is connected to this pin. When the roller 1 rotates, the ignition cam protrusions 21 run over the textolite pad of the moving contact and the contacts is open. The optimal gap between the breaker contacts is 0.35-0.45 mm.
