TRANSMISSION

A Transmission – is a machine transmits rotation moment from engine to drive wheels. Transmission or drivetrain includes clutch, gearbox, prop shaft, differential and drive shafts.

Transmission of modern vehicle consists of:

Clutchis a first stage in a transmission of a car with a manual gearbox. Clutch transmits engine rotation moment to the gearbox. This is mechanical device engages and disengages power transmission from driving shaft to gearbox driven shaft.

Clutch construction

Gearboxis one of the most important part of the car transmits the engine torque to the drive wheels and also provides various transmission ratios to enable the speed of the engine to be adapted to different driving modes.

Gearbox construction

Propeller shaftis a transmission mechanical component transmits rotation moment of one component to other. It provides to connect a drive train that cannot be connected directly because of distance.

Propeller shaft construction

Differential – allows the outer drive wheel to rotate faster than the inner drive wheel during a turn. This is necessary when the vehicle turns, making the wheel that is travelling around the outside of the turning curve roll farther and faster than the other.

Differential construction

Transmission construction in detail:

The quantity of driving axles defines transmission construction.  The most popular are mechanical transmission with two- or three driving axles. If vehicle has two axles, so it has two or one driving axles. If vehicle has three axles, it has three driving axle or two rear driving axle. The vehicles with all driving axles names four wheel drive vehicles.

The vehicle characteristics includes different parameters, for example wheel formules: 4*2, 4*4, 6*4, 6*6.

Wheel formula: 4*2 (4 – total amount of wheels; 2 – drive wheels amount).
